A note on the MIDAS external DLLs

.

At the time of this website’s creation in October 2009, a decision has not yet been taken as to whether the MIDAS DLL plugins will be made commercially available, though in all likelihood they will be if only to cover our own development costs. However, readers must be made aware of their reason for existence.

So far as the standard MIDAS S/R curves are concerned, Andrew Coles has created the code for Metastock (daily charts) and Metastock Pro (intraday charts) and it is available on the next page.

Normally 4 to 5 standard MIDAS S/R curves would be running on any chart. This works fine on the daily charts but for intraday charting there is a severe drain on Metastock Pro’s resources when several MIDAS curves are running simultaneously. For this reason we have created the standard MIDAS S/R curves for intraday charting as an external DLL (written in C++) for Metastock Pro and eSignal. It should be noted that there is still a drain on Metastock Pro’s resources even when external DLLs are running on intraday charts. However, it is not nearly as bad as when the curves are generated by internal code.

As for the MIDAS Topfinder/Bottomfinder (TB-F) curves, these cannot be created in the programming languages of many software trading platforms because most of these languages do not support looping. Looping is required because the TB-F curves require linear interpolation in the algorithm. For this reason, we currently have the TB-F curves running in eSignal and in Metastock and Metastock Pro (there is a difference between these two platform versions).

Readers interested in the TB-F curves who are not using either Metastock, Metastock Pro, or eSignal should contact their software support and enquire whether their software language supports looping. At the time of writing, we believe that some software systems do. For example, TradeStation might. We cannot help with these queries. Interested parties need to go to their own software supplier.

A third Midas indicator is now available for sideways (congested) markets developed by Andrew Coles called the MIDAS Displacement Channel. When the article related to this new indicator sees the light of day he will supply Metastock and Metastock Pro code for it on the next page. However, so far as this indicator is concerned, he makes the same point as was made earlier, namely that the indicator will run smoothly on the daily charts in Metastock, but will run much more slowly on intraday charts in Metastock Pro. For this reason, this indicator too will be made available as an external DLL for Metastock Pro.

We should like to thank our programmer colleague, Satyajit Roy, for creating the external DLL in C++ to run the TB-F curves in Metastock and eSignal. Satyajit is now fully conversant with Metastock and the MDK (Metastock Developer’s Kit) as well as having significant financial market experience on, among other projects, the Indian Stock Exchange.
